Junkers Ju-87 G-2 Stuka
The Junkers Ju-87, or dive bomber, was a two seat, single-engine, all-metal German ground attack aircraft designed by Hermann Pohlman and debuted in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War. It was used throughout several wars and battles successfully and was admired for its precision in ground attacks and was quite valuable to the German forces. It was produced until 1944 when production ceased because of poor maneuverability and the need for a fighter escort to operate effectively in battle. During these years about 6,500 Junkers were made.
This unique plane is easy to recognize by it's inverted gull-wings and fixed spatted undercarriage as well as the wailing siren which was the symbol of German military power. It was fitted with detachable hatches and removable coverings for ease in maintenance. The design, specifically for dive bombing, was used and improved up in years to come, setting the stage for fighter aircrafts thereafter.
